I hope everyone stayed cool through the recent heat wave we had here in
Melbourne! It feels more like a Missouri summer to me and I am truly
enjoying the humidity!
It's been a great couple of weeks for the AWA. The first event in our Arts
& Culture series was held on 1 March at the Melbourne Theatre Company's
production of The Other Place. I think I can speak on behalf of
all attendees when I say that this was a wonderful night. We had a lovely
pre-show event in the Amcor Lounge (which is a beautiful space) and were
fortunate enough to have the director of the production, Nadia Tass, share
her thoughts on the show with us. She even took questions from members and
guests. It was a great way to get a truly unique perspective on the
production! And, of course, the production itself was fantastic!
I am very much looking forward to our next Arts & Culture event at the
MTC, which will be a viewing of Other Desert Cities and will be
held in mid-April. I have seen this production and it is cleaver, funny and
engaging at the same time. A must see!
Over the past two weeks we have also started planning an upcoming event
with the Block Arcade. This year the Block Arcade turns 120 years old and
to celebrate the Block Arcade and the AWA will be holding a cocktail event
and fashion show (featuring fashion through the ages). All proceeds from
the event will go to the Children's Bioethics Centre. The date for this
occasion is still being set, but it looks likely to be at the end of May or
beginning of June. Please watch the AWA website for further details.
Another exciting upcoming event is an evening with the Harvard Krokodiloes,
which will be held on 13 July. This will be similar to the Independence Day
Ball we've held in the past and will include a three course dinner, drinks
and live and silent auctions along with the performance. It should be a
We are currently seeking volunteers to assist with both of the above
events. If you are interested in being on one or both of these committees,
please contact Masoomeh Wake, our VP of Fundraising.
We are also beginning the search for AWA Board members and committee chairs
for the 2013 - 2014 Board year (which runs from 1 August 2013 to 31 July
2014). It takes a lot of energetic and dedicated people to keep the AWA
running smoothly, but being on the Board (or chairing a committee) is very
rewarding and well worth the effort! If you are interested in serving on
the Board or chairing a committee please contact me.
The Easter event is coming up very soon!! I hope many of you are planning
to attend Caulfield Park on 24 March from 12 - 2:30. As in past years, this
will be a day filled with fun, food and friends and will include an Easter
Egg hunt for the children and a visit from the Easter Bunny! This is a
great one to bring the family along to!!
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Easter and I hope to see you at an AWA
