President's Blog - 1 July 2013

Hello everyone and Happy Independence Day!

It's always been a bit difficult for me to get into the Fourth of July spirit here in Australia, with the weather being so cold and there being a decided lack of fireworks. However, I hope many of you are planning to celebrate the holiday with fellow Americans in your region of Melbourne at one of the many AWA regional 4th of July events. All this week there are lunches, potlucks and other get-togethers to celebrate our nation. Please check the AWA website for information about your local event!

I am very happy to announce that Memories of Melbourne, the event that AWA co-sponsored with the Block Arcade on 19 June 2013, was a huge success! We raised over $21,000 for the Children's Bioethics Centre at the RCH - what a wonderful result! Thank you so very much to Masoomeh Wake (our VP of Fundraising) for coordinating the event. Also, thank you to Eve Duddy and Debbie Kimberley for organising the silent auction at the event, which was a great success! It is only though the help of our fantastic volunteers that we are able to raise so much to support the enormously important efforts of the Children's Bioethics Centre!

Our next fundraising event is coming up very quickly!!! We will be hosting Kicks and Krocks on 13 July 2013 at Etihad Stadium during the St Kilda/Carlton footy game - the event will comprise food and drinks (before, during and after the game), premium seating for the game, a live and silent auction and a performance by the Harvard Krokodiloes (an a capella singing group from Harvard University). It will be a wonderful night and, of course, all proceeds will go to the Children's Bioethics Centre. Tickets are available for purchase online!

Hope to see you all at an AWA event soon!!

Kind regards
