The American Women’s Auxiliary to the Royal Children’s Hospital was established 75 years ago as an opportunity to bring American women and friends of America living in Melbourne together.

Our purpose is two-fold.  As an Auxiliary to the Royal Children’s Hospital, we provide support through fundraising and volunteer efforts.  As a social organisation, we provide friendship and support to both new and long time members.

Through our AWAMelbourne Website, Stars & Stripes Newsletter and AWAre Magazine we keep our members up-to-date on social events and volunteer opportunities.  Through offerings of time and energy, our 200+ members find ways to contribute towards volunteer efforts that are often creative and unique to their individual skills and interests.

Our vision is to help make sick children better.  The AWA hosts three annual fundraising events - the Annual Corporate Golf Tournament, the 4th of July Ball and the Thanksgiving Dinner.  Last year alone we raised over $250,000 towards the purchase of ventilators for the paediatric ICU.  These events not only raise money for such a worthy cause, but they provide opportunities for us to reconnect with our cultural heritage.

This year we will be raising funds to purchase a Nerve Conduction Monitor for the Neurology Department of the RCH.  This monitor is used in spinal surgery for severely deformed spines of which the RCH does approximately 100 operations per year.

Who Are Our Members?

The AWA's membership is both dynamic and diverse.  We are young and old, working and non, single and partnered, with children and without.

Women who are American citizens or the spouses/defacto partners of American citizens as well as women of all other nationalities residing in Australia are eligible for membership.

We are always looking for new active members to join.  If you would like to learn more, please go to Join AWA, and don't forget to ask for a New Member Pack!

Who are the Board Members?

Board members are nominated by a committee and elected at an annual General Meeting.  They hold office for a period of not longer than two consecutive years.

If you would like more information about policies pertaining to the Board, see pages 5 - 8 of the Constitution.

To view a listing of our current Auxiliary Board including contact details, go to Contact AWA.

Who serves on the Panel of Advisers?

The Panel of Advisers meets with the Board several times a year, reviews current activities and gives advice and guidance.

What Are Our Activity Groups?

The AWA membership is rich and diverse. As part of our objectives the AWA promotes friendship and provides a social support system for our members. The AWA Board supports those groups and activities that interest our current membership.

The AWA has over twenty different groups that meet monthly. Whatever your interest - books, cooking, wine, girls nights out, restaurants, playgroups, tennis, golf, bunko, bridge, scrapbooking, walking, movies -we do it....and if we don't, we'd love you to start a new group!
