Think a working ladies lunch in the city is a good idea?  Want to see the black tie ball back (but maybe at a different time of year?), Think the AWA should host more family friendly events?  These are just a few of the ideas we've received, but we want more!  The Survey closes next Friday - don't miss your chance to have your say - fill out the survey now !

Then come along to the AGM and let's discuss what the organisation has in store for the '09-'10 board year (haven't RSVP'd yet?  Please do so asap!).

AGM Meeting Coming Up - Have you RSVP'd yet??
Please plan to join the AWA at our Annual General Meeting to meet the board and discuss upcoming plans, (including insights from our survey results!) in addition to learning more about opals.

Halloween - So many options!  Have you Bought Your Tickets?
This year the AWA is hosting Halloween for the kids and the kids inside of us.

  • Children's Trick or Trunk event will be held on Sunday, Oct 25th from 4 - 6:30 pm.  Click here to learn more.
  • Fancy Dress Adults Party (Rock n' Ghoul Halloween Fundraiser) is Halloween Night, Oct 31st and is open to friends, family and colleagues. Click here to learn more.
  • More Halloween to be had with USA Foods.  Trick or Treat with the kids on Halloween day - Sat. Oct 31st, between 10am and 3pm. Families can get involved for best family costume - just bring along a child under 12 with you. Prizes to be given. Volunteering:

Sept Gift Shop Volunteers Needed
Calling all you wonderful volunteers. We are in need of two volunteers for the gift shop for the month of September. Cheryl Barrow and Carolyn Applebee will be working the morning shift.  Fundraising

The 'Rock n' Ghoul' (Adults) Halloween party - Saturday night October 31st - promises to be a fun evening with Rock n' Roll and fancy dress. Invite friends, family and co-workers and let's 'coffin it up' for charity!  Tickets only $25 if you pay before Oct 1st (afterwards, $30). Pay online with Paypal and contact Meredith if you have any questions.

 Social Groups:

Arts & Culture NEW GROUP!
Chockful of events - Let group leader, Katharine Crick, know of your interest (for any of these or future group events).

  • Opera:  Puccini's Tosca   Sept 30 & Oct. 3. 7:30 pm,  Melbourne Opera, in English at the Atheneum Theatre. If you loved Madame Butterfly, you'll love this, too!!

  • Exhibit: Victoria State Library, Swanston Street, CBD  Thursday Oct. 8 @ 10 a.m. or date/time TBD.  The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria traces Melbourne's literary evolution and celebrates Melbourne's status as a UNESCO City of Literature

  • Opera:  Verdi's Aida various dates between Nov 11 - Dec10. Opera Australia, Arts Center. One of Verdi's most famous works, grandly visual and highly entertaining.

  • Concert:  Sir Neville Marriner, founder of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, conducts Nov. 15, 16, 19 at the Melbourne Recital Center.   A giant in the music world.

Coffee Morning
The next Coffee Morning will be this Friday, 18th Sept. at the home of Jennifer Dudley (3 Neave Street, Hawthorn East)
Jennifer's home is also the Outback Aboriginal Art Gallery, and is a fascinating place to visit. Jennifer has kindly offered to give a short introduction to Aboriginal art - it should be a great morning for all so do try to make it!

Evening Book Club September Meeting
Evening Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, September 24th at 6:30 pm.  We'll be discussing Melbourne writer Nam Le's collection of short stories, The Boat, at the Hutong Dumpling Bar in Chinatown.  Hutong's boasts some of the best dumplings in Melbourne and is a top five ethnic dining pick from The Age.  Please contact Heidi Bergman if you'd like to join us.  Haven't read the book but fancy trying the dumplings?  Come along anyway, we'd love to see you there.

Wine Appreciation - October 3rd
Please join the Wine Appreciation group at the Southgate Boutique Wine & Beer Cellar Door on Saturday, October 3rd at noon to sample delicious drops from over 40 boutique wineries and breweries from across Victoria.  Did You Know?:

Here's an additional chance to support the Cystic Fibrosis department of the RCH with the upcoming Cuppa for Kids Afternoon High Tea being held September 24th

The RCH Auxiliaries are hosting 'Cuppa for Kids' event with Afternoon High Tea at the Hotel Windsor on Thursday, Sept. 24th at 2:00pm. The speaker at this event will be Phil Robinson, head of the CF department of which we are currently fundraising for. It would be great if the AWA could fill at least 1 table at this event. Learn more on the RCH website.
